Better Work Stories

Classroom

I was in a classroom full of kids in a decile 1 school. The kids were aged eight to nine, and I was there to talk about the role of the Police. I explained to the kids that I was feeling a bit sad, as my dad had just died. A young hand popped up and its owner asked, “Who shot him?”

I then had to explain that not all people died violently, as obviously in this youngster's household videos became reality. We also worked through the issue of “where’s your gun?”

With the violent society we deal with in South Auckland, kids need contact with the Police regularly in a positive way to give some perspective on our organisation.
