Better Work Stories

Bomb

I was the acting District Shift Senior when a job came in about a bloke pouring petrol on himself at a service station in the middle of the township. I monitored the job and rang Comms to tell them that I was aware of it. I was in the middle of telling the dispatcher that I was going there when all I heard was, “He’s got a bomb!” Things changed and changed quickly. Within 10 minutes I had set up an Incident Control Point and spoken to fire and ambulance. Within one hour I had been joined by an experienced Detective Sergeant and the Armed Offenders Squad and we moved the control base. Within two hours we had evacuated the immediate area. Within three hours we had evacuated the entire CBD and set a cordon of one kilometre around the town. After five hours we deployed the AOS and the bomb disposal team from the Defence Force. The offender was taken into custody with no injury to any member of the public. After six hours the cordons were removed and the town returned to normal.

After eight hours, I stood down and went home - my biggest job ever. Beats selling vacuum cleaners.
