Concern
I was working a late shift on a Friday night when I answered a call from a lady who didn’t live in Taranaki. She hadn’t been able to contact her daughter since the recent tornados and was very worried.
I knew that a tornado had taken a roof off nearby but it hadn’t been too serious compared to other parts of the ‘Naki’. But I told the woman that, if I got a chance that night, I would go and see her daughter and get her to make contact.
On a busy Friday night, I managed to go to the house with my partner at around 10.00pm. When I began talking to the daughter about her mother she assumed something bad had happened. She was most relieved when I told her the story.
The family was so thankful to us for going there and they invited us in. I don’t think they could believe we had taken time out on a busy night to go and do something so ‘trivial.’
Before leaving I did what I had promised her mother I would do and told her, “Your mum just wanted to know that you were OK and says that she loves you lots.” This brought lots of laughter from the members of the household and we were thanked many more times.
