Better Work Stories

Hearing voices

I had reason to visit an address where a wanted person had been seen going into a short time earlier. I spoke with the lady of the house, who told me he wasn’t there but agreed to let me search for him.

As we approached and entered the last room, which was a bedroom, my hostess pushed open the door and said, “See, he’s not here.”

Thereupon, a man’s voice came from the wardrobe on the far side of the room and said, “Who’s not here?”

At the same time he leaned forward and poked his head out of the wardrobe to look directly at me.

I couldn’t help but laugh as he made the trip with me back to the station.
