To be a police officer you need to be a good citizen, over 18 years old upon graduation from Police College, community minded, fit, healthy, and bright enough to pass a range of assessments.
Excellent communication skills are required, as are loyalty, commitment, and a high level of integrity. Your role can highly influence the lives of many people, so being able to make tough judgement calls as well as establish strong personal relationships, community networks and confidence in the wider community is integral.
As well as responding to crimes, you must be able to look at the bigger picture. Solving crime is not just about answering the question ‘who?’ It’s just as important to look at the broader question of ‘why?’. This requires an ability to understand the community that you serve and more importantly the ability to identify and examine the problems that lead to crime.
