New Cops | Do you care enough?

The New Zealand Police are committed to serving and assisting New Zealand through the rapidly evolving COVID-19 pandemic. We are following Government guidelines and Ministry of Health advice as the safety of applicants and staff is our top priority.

Please visit the New Zealand Police website for further information from New Zealand Police on COVID-19 not related to the recruitment process.

NZ Police Recruitment Process

Police are actively monitoring the COVID-19 situation and taking steps to ensure our applicants and staff are safe. We are working as efficiently as we can to ensure that there is continuity in our service, while balancing our organisational priorities. As we work through these competing demands, we do ask for your patience and consideration. What this means is that actions at certain steps in the process may differ from the traditional, timeframes could be extended, or you may find it difficult to contact our staff.

Though some short term measures have been implemented to adapt to the current situation, rest assured that our standards and guidelines have not changed. Some of the changes we have made so far:

Academic assessments and interviews will be conducted online.

No physical fitness testing is currently being conducted and all scheduled rehearsals, initial and final PAT’s have been cancelled until further notice.

PAT Rehearsals are postponed until further notice, but we suggest that you keep up your fitness in your bubble. There are a number of great resources made by our PEO’s which you can follow to ensure you are getting the most out of your training.

To enable the teams to continue to process applications with a focus on priority districts we are currently not accepting applications from those with a posting preference of Bay of Plenty, Waikato, Central, Wellington or Canterbury. If applicants are currently residing in these locations but are willing and committed to relocate to another district then we can still accept their application. For future applicants who are unable to relocate, this is a great time to focus on preparation before application.

NZ Police Re-Joins

Effective from 31 March 2020, NZ Police Executive Leadership Board (ELB) agreed on a pause on hiring for all re-join appointments, except in limited circumstances, until further notice.

Re-joins are only one of many strategies that are considered to meet resourcing needs. Recently, opportunities for former police officers to return to the organisation nationally have become increasingly challenging. To be fair and transparent, we feel it’s important to manage former police officers expectations that should they meet the re-join selection criteria, it is unlikely they will be appointed in a sworn position in the foreseeable future.

If you have recently submitted an Expression of Interest (EOI) or are currently moving through the re-join recruitment process, our team will be in contact with you to discuss what this means for you.

Should you have any questions or if you have been in contact with a member of police about a particular constabulary vacancy, please contact the team by emailing
