Constable Carley Eklund

I genuinely love helping people in good and bad situations.

What is your current role and what does that involve?

I'm a frontline responder in Manurewa, Counties Manukau and get to go to a variety of calls from members of the public requiring help – alcohol related disorder, family violence, burglaries, car crashes, as well as prevention based patrols to help reassure our community.

What role were you doing when Women in Blue was filmed in 2015?

I was working in a similar role but have grown in experience, knowledge, and skills.

When did you join NZ Police?

I joined as an authorised officer in 2012 working in the custody suite in Counties Manukau. Joining police after finishing my Bachelor of Sport and Recreation degree, majoring in Management, was always my goal. I was accepted as a recruit in July 2014 and was attested as a constable in October that year, so I have been a constable for more than two years.

What are your hobbies and interests?

I love playing sports (basically everything) and keeping fit, eating delicious food, and chilling out with my family and friends. I've also used my sports interests to box in charity fights raising awareness of youth suicide and breast cancer – two causes close to my heart.

Why did you become a cop?

My dad was a police officer for 20 years so you can say it's kind of in the blood. I genuinely love helping people in good and bad situations. As a police officer, I'm able to do this every day. It gives me a sense of accomplishment and that "feel good" factor, which I believe is important in life.

Advice to other women who are thinking about becoming a cop?

I believe life experiences and knowledge will help provide a stronger foundation and will help you gain a better understanding of the people you interact with daily. A career as a police officer is amazing. My advice would be to go and explore the world, get some life experience or a degree before you join. Once that's done, joining the police will be one of the best decisions you ever make.
